Upgrading your Oracle® E-Business Suite

We cannot over-emphasize the importance of testing to the success of your Release 12.1 upgrade project. As for any new release, you should formulate an Oracle software testing strategy that details the number of test rounds, types of testing, and who will be involved, with an overall goal of performing end-to-end testing of all business flows and scenarios.

Planning Your Oracle EBS Upgrade from Release 11i to Release 12.1. Oracle White Paper, Jan 2011

Faster, Easier, Safer

Upgrades to the Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) are a regular and painful occurrence. The impact of these upgrades varies between the patch releases, which can normally be absorbed by the existing IT and user teams, to the totally disruptive major releases like 12.1 and 12.2 which have a major impact across the business.

Release 12.1 has been available since 2010 but the associated workload and combined high level of reported bugs, naturally caused many accounts to delay, pushing them closer to the end date for Release 11i support. In response, Oracle has extended the 11i support date to November 2013 but Oracle have also made it clear that all users should have completed their upgrade by this date!

To add to the workload users must also decide how they will move to Fusion, Oracle’s strategic solution to embrace all their ERP customers. Many will choose the incremental path which means another significant upgrade in Release 12.2.

So Oracle accounts are faced with multiple large and small upgrades where the timeline is being driven by the vendor. For most accounts these upgrades have too frequent and too great an impact on the business. Business analysts and end users must be reassigned for extended periods from their valuable and regular roles to plan, test and implement these upgrades to ensure that the associated substantial risk to the business is sensibly managed.
