Application Modernisation Key to an Original Partnership
Desynit and Original Software partner for legacy transformation
13th April 2010 – Original Software, the Application Quality Management (AQM) vendor, today announced a strategic partnership with Desynit, IT services provider and specialist in the field of Application Modernisation. The latest in a string of partnership announcements for Original Software, Desynit joins the company’s growing community of service providers, with a particular focus on legacy transformation projects.
The use of testing and analysis tools which can record, replay and report on the operation of the current system are a key factor in beginning any systems modernisation effort. The creation of test cases for the legacy application allows the system to be documented, allowing changes to be made with confidence.
In addition to checking the quality of modern web-based applications and systems with graphical front ends, Original Software’s solutions also allow unrivalled testing on legacy systems. Legacy green screen applications can be tested at both the user interface level, as well as determining what is happening at the database level. Original Software also facilitates the creation of a test database, where the manipulation and scrambling of sensitive data is possible. Roll back to a previous state if the database becomes corrupted by the testing effort is also provided.
Matthew Morris, Director at Desynit explained: “Original Software’s solution suite is unique in its ability to thoroughly test legacy systems. This is essential in any migration or transformation project. When choosing to incrementally modernise parts of the existing system, test cases allow the results of the new processing to be compared to a base line, ensuring the result of the change is as designed. Extending the use of test cases to exploit automated testing unlocks the potential for developers to deliver system changes within reasonable timescales.”
“We have worked with Original Software for some time now and have had a great deal of interest in what Original Software offers. We are pleased to be formalising our relationship and look forward to continued success as a result of the partnership,” he added.
“Desynit offers in-depth expertise in the field of systems modernisation, an area which is of core interest to many of our customers” said Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software. “Businesses face a key choice in the ongoing maintenance of their software systems, completely replace or incrementally modernise. Our technology together with the services and expertise of Desynit provide an attractive solution to customers embarking on application modernisation projects.”

AppLabs and Original Software Partner to Help Clients Take the Step from Manual to Automated Testing
AppLabs sees huge value proposition for its clients with agile-friendly automation suite
August, 11, 2009 – Original Software, the Application Quality Management (AQM) vendor, today announced a strategic partnership with AppLabs, the world’s largest software testing and quality management company. AppLabs has entered into an agreement with Original Software to take to market its innovative quality management suite. The agreement will likewise allow Original Software to position AppLabs’ services into its own customer base.
Scott Andress, Vice President, Global Alliances and Service Lines at AppLabs commented: “As a tool agnostic services company, we focus on putting the right solution into the right project. We’ve spotted a compelling value proposition for our clients with Original Software’s suite, which can be a great fit for most agile developments, can speed up time-to-market and can provide a silver bullet for those clients struggling to make the transition from manual to automated testing.”
The industry analysts agree. A recent Ovum report stated: ‘TestDrive-Assist provides you with a rich environment for manual testing, but the bigger payback is how it facilitates adoption of full automation. Uniquely for any of the guided manual test execution products that we know of, Original can automatically convert a manual TestDrive-Assist test into a fully automated TestDrive test that can be repeated.” “Overall this is a low risk, low cost way of progressively adopting test automation.” “It fits in with classic waterfall processes, and it can also be used in agile processes more easily than other functional test automation suites.”
“TestDrive-Assist cuts the time it takes to manually test in half, with some customers having recorded savings of 75-80 percent” said Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software. He continued: “This partnership not only provides us with a strong route to market, but allows us to add services to our expanding portfolio. AppLabs’ expertise in testing services and its global, skilled resource pool will be a valued addition to our offering, giving customers the option to outsource projects or business functions or take advantage of specialized consultancy to optimize their IT and business quality management and testing capabilities.”
Original Software throws its hat into the SOA ring
Chooses Green Hat to complete end-to-end SOA testing
July, 8, 2009 – Original Software, the Application Quality Management (AQM) vendor, is partnering with Green Hat, specialists in automated testing technology for integration and SOA, to deliver a unique end-to-end automated testing solution for multi-tiered applications that utilize SOA.
The combined strength and competencies of Original Software and Green Hat will enable customers to take advantage of a total Software Quality solution across the UI, web services and database layers, plus the SOA infrastructure, with all the ease of use and code free functionality that customers of both companies have come to rely on.
Gartner, Inc. notes that through 2010, 60% of unplanned downtime for SOA-based, loosely-coupled applications will be the result of application failure, compared to 40% for non-SOA-based applications. [“Model-Driven Application Management Is a ‘Must’ for Modern Architectures Such as SOA and Web 2.0”, Milind Govekar, July 10, 2008.]
Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software, said: “A number of our key clients and prospects working on SOA initiatives want a quality solution that extends the benefits of GUI testing to the entire integrated application. This alliance with Green Hat gives Original Software an important additional route to market and enables us to deliver a best of breed solution across the user interface, database layer, services, third party systems and middleware that will prevent unexpected costs and delays as critical applications become more complex.”
Business processes involving ERP and BPM systems are two areas affected by the introduction of SOA technologies. As the major ERP vendors introduce more services into their platforms, customers must go beyond GUI testing to assure the function and performance of the total system. Gartner, Inc. observes that when too much manual work is involved, it causes an inability to stay current with patches to packaged software and to deliver well-tested applications. [“Key Issues for Software Quality and Testing, 2008”, Thomas E. Murphy, August 8, 2008]
Continuous improvement expected in BPM projects requires regression testing from the beginning of the implementation. Many long-running BPM processes also touch systems outside their business unit and company. Process owners need end-to-end visibility to pinpoint the exact location of development errors or sub-optimal performance. Green Hat will OEM Original Software Solutions as part of their GH Tester for BPM offering.
“BPM project teams who want GUI testing as an element of a more complex integration and SOA testing framework have asked us to make this part of our offering,” said Peter Cole, President and CTO of Green Hat. “This alliance will give them a single point of contact for all their automated testing requirements.”

About Remain
Since 1992, Remain has been developing software change management solutions for the IBM midrange System i market place to help companies to support their business applications.
‘TD/OMS’ controls the entire software change process from the System i platform, where the product’s repository resides. Changes can be tracked from incident to fix, through test, acceptance, and posting to the live production environment. It handles validation, user sign-off, and documentation of software changes. There is also a fully integrated helpdesk functionality which registers incidents and change requests.
These robust benefits are not limited to the System i environment. Programmers using Windows and UNIX can employ ‘TD/OMS’ functionality to upload software components to the System i. Furthermore, the product supports both unattended component deployment from the System i to UNIX and Windows environments and the installation of deployed code within those environments. Remain incorporates latest technology in order to approach and support the software life cycle process in a modern way. For more information please visit www.remainsoftware.com.
Original Software teams up with Euronet to keep test data secure in the financial services industry
October, 3, 2008 – Original Software, the testing solution vendor and Euronet USA Inc. the software subsidiary of leading electronic payments provider Euronet Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: EEFT), have teamed up to launch the Integrated Transaction Management® (ITM) Test Compliance Kit, addressing a real need to secure test data in the financial services industry.
“Testing on real data is commonplace throughout IT departments all over the globe, but nowhere are the potential security issues higher than the banking industry. Since more than 70% of all data breaches in the industry today are ‘inside jobs’, the exposure of very sensitive customer data in the testing phase (which can often be outsourced), carries with it high risk of financial loss, potential lawsuits and poor public image. Although this kind of practice is in breach of many industry regulations, scarce testing resources often force companies to cut corners,” said Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software.
ITM is Euronet’s proprietary software suite of payment and transaction processing solutions. The partnership between Original and Euronet will provide a software testing solution specifically for ITM installations, allowing users to create a more manageable sub-set of data from their ITM solution and de-identify customer records and other information at risk of data breaches, for use in a testing environment.
The pre-packaged test suite contains relevant data cases and default templates to lead users by the hand through the elements of ITM they should be testing. It also facilitates de-sensitized data-sharing with Euronet and reporting and feedback of any issues that may arise, resolving issues early, enabling faster deployment of ITM and reducing the risk of errors in the live environment.
Doug Goodwin, the senior vice president of global development at Euronet USA Inc., commented on the announcement, “For many of our customers, complying with the various data privacy industry regulations proves difficult and too resource-intensive. We’ve found a solution in Original Software and have implemented it ourselves in-house, providing a good, solid return on investment. We have already invested in building modules, test scripts and data cases for ITM. Naturally, as an innovative solutions provider we like to stay ahead of the technology curve and provide our customers with easy access to the same leading edge solutions.”
The ITM Test Compliance Kit contains elements of Original Software’s leading testing solutions, including Extractor technology – to enable users to create a sub-set of the customer data in their ITM solution and de-identify customer records in line with the various data security standards and regulations, which dictate that production data should not used for testing or development. TestDrive-Assist – the Company’s manual testing support tool, which will make it easy for even non-technical professionals to conduct testing, record for compliance purposes and feedback to Euronet if they come across any issues. TestPlan – will allow them to collect, report on and organize their testing effort with pre-populated placeholders for all the elements and modules of ITM.
“Most software vendors wash their hands of quality issues when the software goes live — that’s where their involvement ends,” continues Armitage. “Euronet recognizes that this is not the end of the story for its customers who need to test the new versions of the software package with their systems before going live. This is an exemplary stance for a vendor to take to the challenging issues of software updates for its clients.”
Next Generation Software Testing Arrives In Israel Thanks to Original Software
IT and QA departments no longer have to put up with legacy software testing tools,
thanks to the introduction of a Hebrew version of TestDrive.
December, 27, 2007 – For the last twenty years, automated testing in Israel has been dominated by tools that use complicated scripting languages. These tools are notoriously difficult to set up, complicated to run, and extremely labour intensive to maintain. It is no wonder then, that 80% of software testing is still carried out manually*, with the majority of this software automation tooling gathering dust on shelves?
Thankfully for the Israeli testing community there is another way. Original Software have enhanced their next generation software testing solution – “TestDrive” to fully support Hebrew software applications, meaning the power and versatility of code-free testing and self-updating scripts are now fully accessible.
Whereas traditional script-based testing tools need a lengthly set up time to install, a specialist workforce to use them, and suffer from continual maintenance problems, the next generation technology in TestDrive offers the users a number of significant advantages:
No Scripting Language: Graphical scripts are built based on the user’s interaction with the application under test. This means that no knowledge of complicated scripting languages is needed. Test automation is no longer the domain of programmers.
Speedy Implementation: Instead of many months of preparation being needed before implementation, with next generation solutions testing can begin in days. This means your investment starts paying you back earlier.
Scripts that Update Themselves when an Application Changes: The intelligent technology behind these solutions mean that they automatically recognise when an application interface has changed and the scripts are updated to reflect the changes. This means that the solutions are completely re-usable, no matter how often the application changes. As a result, the automation zone (the areas of the application that can be tested using automation), is no longer confined to those areas that are stable and risk free.
Dov Kellerman of Original Software reseller, KDe Group, said: “We are very excited to be able to introduce this next generation software solution to the Israel software quality marketplace. For too long people undertaking testing had been left to fend for themselves when their current software testing tool failed them, now we can empower the testing department and enable them to reduce the testing bottleneck in application development.”
A Helping Hand for Manual Testing: If this is not enough, TestDrive also has unique functionality to deliver active support for manual testing. By compiling a pictoral history of recent testing, it is easy to recreate and isolate software defect. Productivity is greatly improved, current customers are enjoying a reduction in their manual testing time by at least 50%.
