Arcadia Paves the Way for Supply Chain Replacement with Original Software

04 August 2014

UK, 4 August 2014: Arcadia, the leading high street retailer, that incorporates brands such as Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Evans, Wallis, Burton and BHS, has chosen to work with Original Software to streamline its software testing and quality assurance (QA) function to support a multi-million pound migration to a new supply chain system.

The scale and importance of the system overhaul means the Arcadia QA team has to increase its productivity and work effectively with third party development and testing partner Tech Mahindra. Arcadia requires real time visibility of the status of testing and any defects, regression testing automation, speeding up of manual testing and the efficient management of test data.

Original Software was selected because its technology is easily adopted, supports agile and waterfall projects and works with Oracle Retail, Manhattan Associates Warehouse Management and Arcadia’s other platforms.

John Walker, responsible for application development and testing at Arcadia, commented: “Arcadia operates a complex IT environment supporting the different Arcadia brands and with an upcoming supply chain system replacement programme, as well as further digital enhancements, it is due to become even more challenging. With this in mind, we need the best QA and testing technology to speed up project delivery and improve software quality. In Original Software we have a partner to help ensure our new systems are a success.”

George Wilson, director at Original Software, said: “Retailers need to constantly enhance their applications in order to contain operating costs and deliver a seamless customer experience across channels. Applications must be able to evolve at the speed the business requires, rather than act as a straight jacket. It is this quality of enabling rapid change that Original Software brings to Arcadia’s QA and testing function. We look forward to working with John and his team.”

Original Software Helps TVS Supply Chain Solutions to Bolster its Software Delivery Process in Response to Global Expansion

15 July 2014

TVS Supply Chain Solutions, a global supply chain and logistics specialist for manufacturers within the automotive, beverage, industrial and defence markets, has selected Original Software to provide a strategic solution to manage and standardize its software delivery process to support the company’s global expansion.
TVS Supply Chain
Following corporate restructuring of TVS Supply Chain Solutions the IT department was required to serve a much broader base, encompassing not only its customers but also providing support for multiple companies within the group across several countries. The challenge for the IT department was to transform itself into an internal software provider, delivering home-grown applications across the group.

A key objective was to increase throughput of application development and enhancements in order to meet the growing needs of the business. Original Software offered a solution that would build automation into the testing function thereby improving testing processes, capturing knowledge and speeding up delivery.

Original Software was selected because of its unique capabilities in IBM platforms. The company’s credentials in Quality Assurance (QA) and the strength of its testing technology were also key factors in winning the contract.
TVS HQ
Jonathan Rothwell, Business Technology Director, at TVS Supply Chain Solutions, commented: “Original Software will be helping IT to move towards a more agile approach, and to apply better standardization and consistency. They have prepared the IT team for a journey whereby the services we deliver will continue to evolve as the company expands. With more robust application services in place the IT team is now far more confident that it can respond quickly to the changing demands of the business.”

George Wilson, Director at Original Software, said: “In a climate where global corporate consolidation is increasing, IT departments are finding that they’re serving a bigger audience which calls for more rigorous standards and processes in testing. IT departments need to make a step-change in professionalism in order to embrace the opportunities that global expansion brings and that’s very much down to having the right QA technology in place.”

TVS Supply Chain Solutions will be implementing Original Software’s TestDrive and TestBench products to ensure a seamless transition from manual to automated testing. TestDrive enables testers to create and maintain sophisticated tests in a fraction of the time required by traditional automation tools. TestBench supports developers with complex unit testing tasks including validating all database effects, middleware transactions and the creation of cut-down, representative test data.

New Research: IT Organizations Not Ready for “Deluge” of Changing Apps

21 June 2014

Many IT departments unprepared for accelerated change in business applications

CHICAGO (June 21, 2014) – Many corporate information technology (IT) departments may be unprepared for the accelerating pace of change in business software applications, according to new research by Original Software, a global software-testing solutions provider. Original Software conducted an online survey earlier this year, canvassing IT personnel at large and small organizations around the world about the role of software-testing technology in their businesses.

When asked “How confident are you that your software applications change quickly enough to achieve your organization’s goals?” the majority of respondents showed ambivalence, with 39 percent expressing a position that is “Neither confident nor unconfident.” In addition, nearly two thirds of respondents reported the performance of their testing tools is either “Average,” “Poor” or “Very Poor” when considering the ability to “support applications that change frequently.”

Interpreting the study’s results, Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software commented: “Analysts estimate there will be as many as 200 billion apps downloaded to smartphones, tablets and other devices by 2017. Many of those apps will be processing financial transactions or e-commerce purchases for businesses and consumers, generating waves of changes to enterprise applications of all kinds. How can corporate IT organizations cope with this roiling deluge of new software when they don’t seem to be paying enough attention to the challenges of quality control and have little faith in the applicability of their software testing technology?”

Companies whose IT departments struggle to deliver the frequent change required by internal or customer-facing applications risk higher operating costs, lower productivity and competitive disadvantage, Armitage explained.
“Leveraging new technologies, such as mobile apps for retailers and financial services firms, is a smart move,” he elaborated. “But cutting corners in quality assurance processes to keep up with changes in software is a risky proposition.”

To ensure the quality of new and upgraded applications, Armitage offered IT teams three tips:
• “Test quickly and often,”
• “Test in coordination and collaboration with your business users”
• “And then re-test before going live with any application.”

Last month, Original Software announced the latest release of Qualify, its industry-leading application quality management (AQM) solution. The upgrade enhances the ability of project and test managers to optimize testing activities in real time and meet project objectives with the most efficient use of resources.

“The management information and planning capability help organizations respond quickly to changes across their software projects and make the most efficient use of resources,” Armitage said.

About the Study
Original Software conducted a 60-day online survey during the first quarter of 2014 among personnel involved in software testing and quality assurance at large and small companies around the world. More than 100 technical and business managers responded representing nearly two dozen industries, most notably the fields of business technology, financial services and retail. Respondents from 15 countries participated with roughly a third coming from the US and about a quarter coming from the UK.

Original Software optimizes software testing resource management

15 May 2014

- New version of Qualify provides real-time visibility and control -

15 May 2014: Original Software, the global software quality vendor, has today announced the latest release of Qualify, its industry leading application quality management (AQM) solution. The upgrade enhances the ability of project and test managers to optimize testing activities in real-time and meet project objectives with the most efficient use of resources.

Organizations often struggle to derive high quality, insightful management information on testing related activities. Gathering data and creating reports and dashboards manually is time-consuming and prone to data ageing. The improvements within Qualify allow users to filter live data and structure reports exactly to their requirements, using graphs and pie charts to illustrate information such as “incomplete business requirements”, “test cases with open issues”, “UAT percentage complete” and “defects by owner”. Now, project sponsors can be kept informed at all times.

Armed with this visibility, project and test managers can use another feature of this Qualify release – the ability to drag and drop employees and consultants to outstanding testing tasks. The solution provides a graphical view of all projects, tasks and resources, allowing teams to fully maximize the resource they have available – shoring up where needed or redeploying elsewhere where not. This includes flagging up when specific expertise is needed, for example an automation expert or business analyst, and part-time workers and holidays, giving a real-time picture of the time and resource available.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software explains: “Businesses face significant pressure when going through a software implementation or upgrade and this new version of Qualify helps them to take a more efficient approach to QA and testing. The management information and planning capability help organizations respond quickly to changes across their software projects and make the most efficient use of resources.”

A third of UK organisations holding back on Oracle R12 upgrade

04 March 2014

Research from Original Software and the UK Oracle User Group unveils upgrade challenges

London, 27 February 2014 – Research conducted by Original Software, a software quality company, in conjunction with UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG) reveals that a third of organisations using Oracle E-Business Suite have not yet upgraded to R12 and a minority plan to remain on 11i with third party support or sustained support. The research canvassed the opinions of 156 Oracle E-Business Suite users in 20 countries.

The survey findings provide insight into organisations that have already been through the R12 upgrade process, the elements they found challenging and what they regarded were the most important factors for success.

Key findings:

1. 32% of organisations using Oracle E-Business Suite have not yet upgraded.

• A further 5% stated that they plan to re-implement Oracle E-Business Suite.

2. Oracle E-Business Suite users cite customisations (34%), stakeholder buy-in (17%), data migration (14%) and cost (6%) and as their biggest upgrade challenges.

3. Oracle E-Business Suite users rate planning as the most time consuming element of the upgrade process, with over half the respondents (67%) rated planning as the highest workload.

• Other areas rated as having high workloads include fixing issues (50%), impact assessment (49%), user acceptance testing (48%) and reapplying customisations, modifications, localisations etc (48%).

4. Oracle E-Business Suite users have a clear idea on what they regard as the most important factors for success in an upgrade.

• Almost three quarters of respondents (72%) selected minimising the risk of not supporting core business systems as their most important success factor.

• Others cited minimising project cost (15%), minimising the time business users have to spend on the project (9%) and deliver as quickly as possible (7%).

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software commented: “As this research shows, a high number of organisations still have their heads in the sand where it comes to the R12 upgrade. This could leave them in a vulnerable position – the quicker they start preparing and putting plans into action, the better. Upgrades are becoming more and more prevalent in the business landscape – the more proficient organisations become at preparing for them and executing upgrade strategies the better.”

David Warburton-Broadhurst, UKOUG president comments, “It’s great to be working with the partner community to provide insight in this way. Looking at the upgrade pain points highlighted by respondents reinforces that having a knowledgeable network of contacts to draw on during the different stages of the upgrade process is essential. Having access to and building this support network is one of the biggest benefits of engaging with a user group.”

This is the first-ever joint survey undertaken by UK Oracle User Group and Original Software. Original Software automates time-consuming testing tasks such as documenting processes, creating test scripts, executing tests, documenting issues, regression testing and project management. The purpose of this study is to take a snapshot of the current UK Oracle market and gauge the key considerations for people when looking at upgrading their Oracle E-Business Suite estate. It is designed to be a useful resource for Oracle users, providing an overview of others’ experiences of and plans for upgrading to R12.

Web Disasters will Decline in 2014

09 January 2014

- Original Software’s pick of the New Year’s big software quality trends –

UK, 9th January 2014: The New Year will be the time for organizations to finesse their online presence, iron out any defects in online operational efficiency and ensure they are complying with online regulations, according to predictions for 2014 from software quality company Original Software. This follows on from a disastrous 2013 which saw a proliferation of web failures – including Obamacare – which resulted in angry customers, negative media coverage and reputational damage.

Further predictions from Original Software include:

1. HP testing tools on the wane: support costs for HP’s Quality Centre and QTP have risen steadily since 2006 and its licensing model gets increasingly complex. But the cost of building and maintaining automation in QTP are where the really thumping costs lie. We predict users will start to look for simpler, faster testing tools that cope better with frequently changing applications and websites. Testing is challenging enough without having to put up with tools that are expensive, hard to use and create fragile test assets.

2. Thumbs down for ERP upgrades: major upgrades of ERP systems requiring multi-million dollar budgets will be less tolerated and the likes of Oracle and SAP will face increasing resistance from their users. This is particularly relevant in 2014 as the Oracle EBS upgrade from 11i to R12 is due to cause significant headaches. The onerous process will cause users to seek products that can significantly reduce the pain, risk and time associated with these upgrades.

3. Web disasters on the decline: companies will put more importance on the accuracy of their on-line presence. Whether it is the validity of product/prices or the regulatory conformance of e-commerce terms and conditions, online failures create bad publicity, cause significant reputational damage and a liability to significant fines. Walmart found this out the hard way in October when a website glitch encouraged customers to buy bargain mis-priced electrical goods which Walmart reneged on.

4. Business ownership: As applications proliferate within organizations, the burden on the business of testing and validation grows inexorably. Business users seconded to IT projects will demand tools to make their task fast and efficient so they can get back to their ‘real’ jobs as quickly as possible.

5. Testing centers of excellence: Original Software predicts that more organizations will create testing centers of excellence (TCOE) in 2014 as companies look to deliver economies of scale, pool skills and establish focus. But as agile becomes a more prevalent software development methodology, TCOEs must be equipped with appropriate testing technology, rather than forcing legacy waterfall tools to work.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software, commented: “The last few years have seen a lot of change in the quality assurance market but we think there will be a paradigm shift in 2014. Web defects in particular have dogged the business landscape in 2013 and leading organizations will boost their QA defenses. The software environment has changed dramatically and the old tools that supported development are no longer practicable and totally inappropriate for business users. A new dawn is coming in the world of testing.”

Ends.

The 2013 IT Disaster Hall of Shame

12 December 2013

Original Software’s pick of the year’s ten biggest technology catastrophes

London, 12 December 2013: 2013 has been a busy year for tech failures, on both sides of the Atlantic. All organizations are at risk of IT disasters, which could have an adverse effect on the operational running of the business and cause significant problems. This “hall of shame” demonstrates how easily technology disasters can happen and the fall out that follows.

Here are our top ten tech disasters, which have caused significant disruption, reputational damage and diminished customer or investor confidence:

1. Obamacare’s Healthcare.gov’s website: this ran into major problems when the flagship of Obama’s public health initiative failed to work on launch in October. US citizens seeking health insurance were denied access to the website and had to resort to traditional phone and postal methods. A lack of testing was flagged as the key technological reason behind the failing and Obama and healthcare officials were left looking incompetent and badly prepared.

2. Sabre travel booking system: the global travel industry was thrown into chaos during the peak of the school holiday season, when Sabre’s worldwide reservation system – deployed by over 300 airlines – went down, causing cancellations and delays for hundreds of thousands of passengers, despite the system only being down for just under three hours.

3. Natwest system failure: this UK high street bank ran into problems earlier this year when system glitches caused chaos, denying ATM, chip and pin and internet banking facilities to customers, who took to Twitter en masse to criticize the company and its handling of the problem. RBS also suffered a similar problem in recent weeks, which has led to some experts talking about the underinvestment in banking IT.

4. NHS: a computer meltdown at Scotland’s biggest health board caused chaos this autumn leading to 500 operations and appointments being postponed. A major IT glitch with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s servers meant doctors and nurses were unable to access vital patient information. Luckily no patient lives were endangered during the system failure.

5. Walmart’s electronic bargains: shoppers logging on to Walmart’s website in October thought they’d bagged a bargain when they managed to buy computer monitors and projectors – valued at $500 – for as little as $8.99. The retailer blamed IT glitches causing data discrepancies. This is likely down to a lack of data validation in areas of Wal-Mart’s website. Wal-Mart refused to honor these bargain deals, cancelling customer purchases to the relief of its shareholders but the outrage of customers who vented their fury on social media.

6. Bank of England hardware failure: UK investors were left in the dark in September when the BofE had to resort to using back up systems due to a technical failure. The failover meant the BofE was unable to make its quantitative easing announcement, based on which gilts it would purchase, causing disruption and confusion for the markets.

7. California’s payroll failures: the Californian state government is suing SAP over a failure to adequately develop and test a botched upgrade of its payroll system, causing problems for many of its 240,000 workforce. SAP has denied responsibility, blaming the Californian controllers’ office for not properly managing the upgrade. The payroll system was decades old, so an upgrade was always going to be problematic.

8. M&S glitches at distribution center: the British high street stalwart encountered numerous issues at its brand new distribution center at Castle Downingtown in August. IT glitches meant that trading directors were concerned about letting stock orders be processed by the distribution center in case it affected availability in their stores.

9. Defective benefits systems: four US states have been in turmoil this year and hundreds of thousands of unemployed have gone unpaid as new benefits systems went live with multiple defects. California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Florida have all had major software problems with systems implemented by Deloitte. In California, the defect riddled system denied payments to over 300,000 unemployed people during Labor Day weekend.

10. Blackberry technical glitches: beleaguered hand held device company Blackberry endured further embarrassment in September when users experienced a Blackberry black out with problems starting in Europe and quickly spreading to the Americas and other continents. Research In Motion blamed an IT glitch and it took some time for users to access their emails and messages.

Colin Armitage, CEO of software quality company Original Software commented: “As this hall of shame shows, IT disasters can be damaging, disruptive and downright dangerous. And a further layer to technical failures in the age of social media is that they can mobilize large numbers of customers and shareholders to voice their criticisms online, causing lasting reputational damage. Any techy will tell you that it’s impossible to mitigate for every potential failure. But as this list demonstrates, defect detection, quality and testing have to move up the corporate agenda. Skimp on this and you’re really running the gauntlet.”

Ends.
