A third of UK organisations holding back on Oracle R12 upgrade

04 March 2014

Research from Original Software and the UK Oracle User Group unveils upgrade challenges

London, 27 February 2014 – Research conducted by Original Software, a software quality company, in conjunction with UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG) reveals that a third of organisations using Oracle E-Business Suite have not yet upgraded to R12 and a minority plan to remain on 11i with third party support or sustained support. The research canvassed the opinions of 156 Oracle E-Business Suite users in 20 countries.

The survey findings provide insight into organisations that have already been through the R12 upgrade process, the elements they found challenging and what they regarded were the most important factors for success.

Key findings:

1. 32% of organisations using Oracle E-Business Suite have not yet upgraded.

• A further 5% stated that they plan to re-implement Oracle E-Business Suite.

2. Oracle E-Business Suite users cite customisations (34%), stakeholder buy-in (17%), data migration (14%) and cost (6%) and as their biggest upgrade challenges.

3. Oracle E-Business Suite users rate planning as the most time consuming element of the upgrade process, with over half the respondents (67%) rated planning as the highest workload.

• Other areas rated as having high workloads include fixing issues (50%), impact assessment (49%), user acceptance testing (48%) and reapplying customisations, modifications, localisations etc (48%).

4. Oracle E-Business Suite users have a clear idea on what they regard as the most important factors for success in an upgrade.

• Almost three quarters of respondents (72%) selected minimising the risk of not supporting core business systems as their most important success factor.

• Others cited minimising project cost (15%), minimising the time business users have to spend on the project (9%) and deliver as quickly as possible (7%).

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software commented: “As this research shows, a high number of organisations still have their heads in the sand where it comes to the R12 upgrade. This could leave them in a vulnerable position – the quicker they start preparing and putting plans into action, the better. Upgrades are becoming more and more prevalent in the business landscape – the more proficient organisations become at preparing for them and executing upgrade strategies the better.”

David Warburton-Broadhurst, UKOUG president comments, “It’s great to be working with the partner community to provide insight in this way. Looking at the upgrade pain points highlighted by respondents reinforces that having a knowledgeable network of contacts to draw on during the different stages of the upgrade process is essential. Having access to and building this support network is one of the biggest benefits of engaging with a user group.”

This is the first-ever joint survey undertaken by UK Oracle User Group and Original Software. Original Software automates time-consuming testing tasks such as documenting processes, creating test scripts, executing tests, documenting issues, regression testing and project management. The purpose of this study is to take a snapshot of the current UK Oracle market and gauge the key considerations for people when looking at upgrading their Oracle E-Business Suite estate. It is designed to be a useful resource for Oracle users, providing an overview of others’ experiences of and plans for upgrading to R12.

Web Disasters will Decline in 2014

09 January 2014

- Original Software’s pick of the New Year’s big software quality trends –

UK, 9th January 2014: The New Year will be the time for organizations to finesse their online presence, iron out any defects in online operational efficiency and ensure they are complying with online regulations, according to predictions for 2014 from software quality company Original Software. This follows on from a disastrous 2013 which saw a proliferation of web failures – including Obamacare – which resulted in angry customers, negative media coverage and reputational damage.

Further predictions from Original Software include:

1. HP testing tools on the wane: support costs for HP’s Quality Centre and QTP have risen steadily since 2006 and its licensing model gets increasingly complex. But the cost of building and maintaining automation in QTP are where the really thumping costs lie. We predict users will start to look for simpler, faster testing tools that cope better with frequently changing applications and websites. Testing is challenging enough without having to put up with tools that are expensive, hard to use and create fragile test assets.

2. Thumbs down for ERP upgrades: major upgrades of ERP systems requiring multi-million dollar budgets will be less tolerated and the likes of Oracle and SAP will face increasing resistance from their users. This is particularly relevant in 2014 as the Oracle EBS upgrade from 11i to R12 is due to cause significant headaches. The onerous process will cause users to seek products that can significantly reduce the pain, risk and time associated with these upgrades.

3. Web disasters on the decline: companies will put more importance on the accuracy of their on-line presence. Whether it is the validity of product/prices or the regulatory conformance of e-commerce terms and conditions, online failures create bad publicity, cause significant reputational damage and a liability to significant fines. Walmart found this out the hard way in October when a website glitch encouraged customers to buy bargain mis-priced electrical goods which Walmart reneged on.

4. Business ownership: As applications proliferate within organizations, the burden on the business of testing and validation grows inexorably. Business users seconded to IT projects will demand tools to make their task fast and efficient so they can get back to their ‘real’ jobs as quickly as possible.

5. Testing centers of excellence: Original Software predicts that more organizations will create testing centers of excellence (TCOE) in 2014 as companies look to deliver economies of scale, pool skills and establish focus. But as agile becomes a more prevalent software development methodology, TCOEs must be equipped with appropriate testing technology, rather than forcing legacy waterfall tools to work.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software, commented: “The last few years have seen a lot of change in the quality assurance market but we think there will be a paradigm shift in 2014. Web defects in particular have dogged the business landscape in 2013 and leading organizations will boost their QA defenses. The software environment has changed dramatically and the old tools that supported development are no longer practicable and totally inappropriate for business users. A new dawn is coming in the world of testing.”

The 2013 IT Disaster Hall of Shame

12 December 2013

Original Software’s pick of the year’s ten biggest technology catastrophes

London, 12 December 2013: 2013 has been a busy year for tech failures, on both sides of the Atlantic. All organizations are at risk of IT disasters, which could have an adverse effect on the operational running of the business and cause significant problems. This “hall of shame” demonstrates how easily technology disasters can happen and the fall out that follows.

Here are our top ten tech disasters, which have caused significant disruption, reputational damage and diminished customer or investor confidence:

1. Obamacare’s Healthcare.gov’s website: this ran into major problems when the flagship of Obama’s public health initiative failed to work on launch in October. US citizens seeking health insurance were denied access to the website and had to resort to traditional phone and postal methods. A lack of testing was flagged as the key technological reason behind the failing and Obama and healthcare officials were left looking incompetent and badly prepared.

2. Sabre travel booking system: the global travel industry was thrown into chaos during the peak of the school holiday season, when Sabre’s worldwide reservation system – deployed by over 300 airlines – went down, causing cancellations and delays for hundreds of thousands of passengers, despite the system only being down for just under three hours.

3. Natwest system failure: this UK high street bank ran into problems earlier this year when system glitches caused chaos, denying ATM, chip and pin and internet banking facilities to customers, who took to Twitter en masse to criticize the company and its handling of the problem. RBS also suffered a similar problem in recent weeks, which has led to some experts talking about the underinvestment in banking IT.

4. NHS: a computer meltdown at Scotland’s biggest health board caused chaos this autumn leading to 500 operations and appointments being postponed. A major IT glitch with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s servers meant doctors and nurses were unable to access vital patient information. Luckily no patient lives were endangered during the system failure.

5. Walmart’s electronic bargains: shoppers logging on to Walmart’s website in October thought they’d bagged a bargain when they managed to buy computer monitors and projectors – valued at $500 – for as little as $8.99. The retailer blamed IT glitches causing data discrepancies. This is likely down to a lack of data validation in areas of Wal-Mart’s website. Wal-Mart refused to honor these bargain deals, cancelling customer purchases to the relief of its shareholders but the outrage of customers who vented their fury on social media.

6. Bank of England hardware failure: UK investors were left in the dark in September when the BofE had to resort to using back up systems due to a technical failure. The failover meant the BofE was unable to make its quantitative easing announcement, based on which gilts it would purchase, causing disruption and confusion for the markets.

7. California’s payroll failures: the Californian state government is suing SAP over a failure to adequately develop and test a botched upgrade of its payroll system, causing problems for many of its 240,000 workforce. SAP has denied responsibility, blaming the Californian controllers’ office for not properly managing the upgrade. The payroll system was decades old, so an upgrade was always going to be problematic.

8. M&S glitches at distribution center: the British high street stalwart encountered numerous issues at its brand new distribution center at Castle Downingtown in August. IT glitches meant that trading directors were concerned about letting stock orders be processed by the distribution center in case it affected availability in their stores.

9. Defective benefits systems: four US states have been in turmoil this year and hundreds of thousands of unemployed have gone unpaid as new benefits systems went live with multiple defects. California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Florida have all had major software problems with systems implemented by Deloitte. In California, the defect riddled system denied payments to over 300,000 unemployed people during Labor Day weekend.

10. Blackberry technical glitches: beleaguered hand held device company Blackberry endured further embarrassment in September when users experienced a Blackberry black out with problems starting in Europe and quickly spreading to the Americas and other continents. Research In Motion blamed an IT glitch and it took some time for users to access their emails and messages.

Colin Armitage, CEO of software quality company Original Software commented: “As this hall of shame shows, IT disasters can be damaging, disruptive and downright dangerous. And a further layer to technical failures in the age of social media is that they can mobilize large numbers of customers and shareholders to voice their criticisms online, causing lasting reputational damage. Any techy will tell you that it’s impossible to mitigate for every potential failure. But as this list demonstrates, defect detection, quality and testing have to move up the corporate agenda. Skimp on this and you’re really running the gauntlet.”

Ends.

Original Software further reduces the pain of maintaining enterprise applications

22 November 2013

New version of software quality suite resolves upgrade and patch headaches

London, 22nd November 2013: Original Software, the global software quality vendor, has today announced the release of Qualify 14, its industry leading application quality management (AQM) and test execution suite, which reduces validation testing work – required to ensure enterprise applications work correctly – by 75 per cent.

From every process a user conducts – for example, a finance team member creating an expense report in their ERP application – the new version of the software generates four key assets:

1. Business process description: pdf that describe the steps performed in every module of the application, complete with screenshots.

2. Manual testing scripts: detailed, step-by-step scripts that allow anyone to validate that the entire application functions exactly as required.

3. Automated tests: tests that allow the validation of functionality without human interaction.

4. Training animation: a lightweight video, complete with automatically generated voiceover that shows new users of the application exactly how to use it for every business process.

These assets ensure that application and process knowledge is spread throughout an organization, rather than being limited to a select few, and significantly reduces the work involved in validating application functionality, which is typically carried out by users manually.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software comments: “As organizations deploy more and more business applications, they can’t afford for the slew of application updates to be detrimental to productivity. For most companies, the process of ensuring that updated applications still meet the needs of the business requires users and IT to perform hundreds or thousands of man-days of manual work. But our software streamlines the entire process. Through automation, we can reduce validation work by 75 per cent and virtually eliminate application defects. Our solution requires no specialist skills and can be deployed within days, bringing immediate respite to organizations that suffer from having staff taken away from their core tasks.“

Original Software further reduces length of ERP upgrade projects

09 August 2013

Innovative technology that reduces IT’s reliance on users for system knowledge

Original Software, the software quality vendor, announces an innovation that extends to 30% the reduction it brings to the length of enterprise application upgrade projects.

The new technology, called Animation, allows users of enterprise apps to create in seconds an animated recording of how to perform a business process. The recording can be viewed by anyone with a Windows PC, enabling IT departments and their partners to understand the exact functionality the business requires. The technology reduces IT’s reliance on users for system knowledge and streamlines requirements gathering, development, testing, training, and support:

  1. Requirements gathering – For the first time, create accurate “as-is” ERP process documentation. Processes are captured automatically, in detail, and without human error.
  2. Development – High quality documentation eliminates to-and-fro conversation among developers, business analysts and users.
  3. Testing & validation – Create perfect test scripts and defect reports without manual work. Re-run tests automatically to reduce the number and duration of manual cycles.
  4. Training – Build a library of training documentation as a by-product of testing and validation.
  5. Support – Users send recordings of system issues to the help desk, speeding up issue resolution.
  6. Business continuity – Eliminate the risk of being unable to perform business processes when key individuals are absent.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software, said, “Upgrades of complex systems like SAP and Oracle E-Business Suite are long, expensive and painful because the knowledge of what the system needs to do resides with users in finance, HR, sales, service, and so on. The IT department has to refer to these users frequently, but access is limited, causing project timeframes and costs to balloon.

“Animations are the quickest and clearest way to understand a process because they mimic a user interacting with the application. The technology, which requires no specialist skills, is part of an overall software solution that reduces the length of projects by 30%. The package includes a quality management platform, manual testing, test automation, database testing, and for Oracle E-Business Suite R12, a library of pre-defined test cases. Customers are reporting significant productivity gains, cost savings, and risk reduction.”

Original Software transforms the delivery of enterprise applications in a day

11 July 2013

Rapid roll-out of quality management infrastructure and best practices

11 July 2013 – Original Software, the software quality solutions vendor, today announced the launch of Qualify Web, a browser version of its application quality management platform that enables organizations to deliver mission-critical enterprise applications quickly and cost effectively. The solution requires a single day to roll out and train users.

Qualify Web provides organizations with a quality management infrastructure, best practice testing processes, and a single point of contact for project managers, QA teams, business users, executives and others. It provides a repository for test assets, such as requirements, plans, scripts, and reports; workflow for the management of tasks and defects; and dashboards for the visibility of project status.

With access to real-time visibility into the status of all activities, project managers can immediately respond to bumps in the road and maintain the project scope, budget, and timetable.

The solution eliminates a multitude of time-consuming and error-prone manual processes: uploading assets to a central repository, chasing colleagues for the latest status on their tasks, compiling reports, and communicating tasks.

It supports agile, waterfall, and hybrid processes, and is accessed from phone, tablet or desktop browsers.

Colin Armitage, CEO of Original Software said: “The traditional market-leading quality management platforms were built for an era of long development cycles and occasional releases that is ancient history. Original Software meets today’s demand for frequent updates of mission critical applications, delivered in a much faster, cost-effective, and low risk way. Qualify Web is part of a quality suite that transforms the speed organizations can test and validate their ERP and core operational applications, helping them to meet their corporate objectives with confidence.”

Application Quality That Keeps Getting Better

18 December 2012

Original Software charge into 2013 with Application Quality Management at its forefront

18th December, 2012, – Original Software, the leading Application Quality Management (AQM) vendor, will be seeing in the new year with its latest release of their AQM platform. In addition to a multitude of customer driven requirements, this latest version delivers three key features, which further strengthen the company’s product leadership and supports their mission to deliver the fastest and highest ROI in the automated software quality market.

Firstly, enhanced Multi-Stream Testing (MST). MST has been available for a while with the initial implementation being based on the simple manual assignment of work load. Now, the company has focused on validating correct implementation across diverse platforms. MST is fundamental to automated testing across the application target configurations and it has the potential to deliver vital information when tests fail due to resource contention and locking. “What this latest version delivers”, says Colin Armitage, CEO at Original Software, “is the ability to automatically assign work to each drone PC according to the specified target platform needs, and then to capture full metrics against a common timeline for root cause analysis when problems are encountered. We believe these abilities to be unique in the marketplace”.

Secondly, this release sees enhancements, which are driven by the strict needs of the FDA’s CFR Title 21, Part 11 to meet the needs of electronic quality management systems in the pharmaceutical sector. Qualify, Original Software’s AQM solution, is the collaboration, communication and management platform that underpins Application Quality Management. Its ability to support multiple concurrent development methodologies is making it the platform of choice for companies targeting an agile methodology or replacing the ageing and increasingly expensive HP Quality Centre platform. In this latest release Qualify has also been re-engineered to become browser neutral and tablet friendly. “We see an increasing trend for tablets to become the device of choice for management and executives”, commented Armitage, “and the need to capture secure electronic signatures from busy management via mobile devices is key to proper processes in a cGMP managed environment”.

Finally, Original Software has been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the ‘taster’ version of its animation capability. In response, the company is releasing a fully featured version that encompasses all the user enhancement requests. “Our customers have benefited by creating movies that facilitate user training, application documentation and communication with third parties. The common theme is that the movies bring the rich content we have available to vibrant life and shortens the knowledge absorption curve.

During 2012, the company saw four major releases of its AQM and 2013 will continue this pace of delivery against its product roadmap.

Oracle Users Make Upgrades Work with an Easy Repeatable Process

05 December 2012

Original Software showcases a Faster, Easier, Safer approach to Oracle E-Business Suite® upgrades at the UKOUG Conference

3rd December, 2012, – Original Software, the leading Application Quality Management (AQM) vendor, today announced an innovative three-staged approach to help Oracle users reduce the pain of implementing ERP upgrades, while reducing the associated risks. The impact of these ERP upgrades is often huge, while Original Software’s goal is to transform them into an “Easy Repeatable Process”.

“Each of these elements are essential to transform the upgrade landscape”, commented Colin Armitage, CEO at Original Software, “and it is their cohesive integration that is the key.”

The first element is an AQM system that is pre-loaded to reflect the Oracle E-Business Suite upgrade methodology. It provides the essential communication, collaboration and controls for each project. The second element is an impact analysis, so the extent of the upgrade can be rapidly understood, planned and the appropriate resources allocated. The final element empowers manual testers to reduce the impact of this painful activity, supported by an easy migration to test automation to further reduce the workload in the future.

“The Oracle E-Business Suite community faces multiple challenges as they move from Release 11i to 12.x and potentially beyond to Fusion,” says Armitage. “Original Software’s intuitive solution is designed for business analysts, IT and end users. It directly tackles Oracle E-Business Suite upgrade issues, by reducing the impact on the users, lowering the risk and shortening project timescales.”

UKOUG Conference is a Technology and Applications Forum for the Oracle Community organised by the UK based Oracle User Group, (UKOUG), and helps users of the full family of Oracle business applications and database software gain greater value from their Oracle investments. It takes place today, through to Wednesday 5th December at the ICC, Birmingham.
