Your Goal: You are the key conduit between the Business Users and the development group. You may have no direct reports so authority comes from the current authorized project and more importantly, its executive sponsor.
With a foot and knowledge in each camp you are uniquely placed to undertake the lead in defining requirements, initial validation of the proposed technical solution and ensuring that the timescales and resources are hit and made available. Translation of user needs into detailed IT requirements and also translating technical realities back to the users is your primary goal.
Your Challenge: Once a project has been approved in outline you need to discover and record the business requirements to make it a reality. As completed code becomes available for User Acceptance Testing, you will have a key role in planning, driving and probably helping to execute this activity.
In the past Business Analysts were once System Analysts. The role of a Business Analyst evolved as it needed to do more than document processes and apply technical knowledge. You now act as a conduit between users and developers. You are a problem solver and great communicator with diplomacy and the ability to understand user's needs. To have flexible operations is desirable as you are responsible for meeting the demands of the business and identifying change and the impact of change.
A coherent planning and management platform will be fundamental to the success of any quality enhancement project you undertake.
